Devilbend Farm Beer Co.

We recently caught up with Michael, Head brewer at Devilbend Farm Beer Co. and asked him a few questions;

Tell us about your role at at the brewery?

I’m the head brewer at Devilbend Farm Beer, where I get to craft beers from ingredients we grow right here on the farm. Our own hops, barley, and wheat. What I love most about the role is how genuinely local it all is. There’s something incredibly satisfying about knowing the beer we brew is grown, made, and poured right here on the Mornington Peninsula.

What do you enjoy most about the Mornington Peninsula?

What I love most about the Peninsula is how connected we are to the land and community. One humbling moment for me was realising just how important every drop of water is. We rely entirely on rainwater for brewing, so I had to quickly adopt smarter water conservation practices. It was a big learning curve, but it really made me appreciate how precious our resources are and how much care goes into every part of what we do here.

Beer grows here. A picturesque 10 minute drive from Mornington to Tuerong and as soon as you drive through the rustic iron gates you know you are in for something cool.. The farm is unique to the core, the team grow their own hops and barley, which are prime ingredients in their brew.

I am humbled to have photographed at different times of the year when the Barley begins as bright ‘grass’ to days before harvesting. We enjoyed a tour of the brewery led by Michael and the awesome team, learning all about their goals, products, sustainability and recycling practises. Their paddock to pint philosophies with their own grains and hops and also cattle. The family are fourth generation Peninsula farmers, supporting and kindling relationships with other local farmers, growers and producers so the wheels of practicality turn nicely.

We enjoyed a delicious meal from their well thought out menu that included seasonal and local fare, of course washed down with few Devilbend lager pints. There is something quite special about sipping a brew right where the ingredients are grown.
